Joanne Casida Johnson Payne, age 81, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2013, at Lakeview Village in Lenexa, Kansas. She was born on November 3, 1931, in Garnett, Kansas, the daughter of Walter and Florence (Russell) Casida. Joanne graduated from Garnett High School in 1949. She attended Baker University and joined the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She transferred to KU and graduated from KU Nursing Program as a Registered Nurse in September of 1953. Joanne joined the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps in August of 1957, and absolutely loved it! She was the youngest in age and rank (LTJG) to ever be assigned to USNMC Bethesda. She loved her work and enjoyed taking care of patients, some of which included retired Admirals. One of Joanne's fondest memories was the band playing "Kansas City" as she would walk into the Officer's Club. She was stationed for 2 years in Naples, Italy at Station Hospital. While in Italy, when she wasn't working, she was out with her camera and shopping. She returned to the States in 1962. She married Captain Burt C. Johnson, a Navy surgeon and had a son, Christopher R. Johnson in 1964. They later divorced. Joanne returned to Kansas City in 1970, where she worked as RN at KU Medical Center for 28 years. She then retired and worked as a volunteer at KU Medical Center for 2 years. Joanne was an avid walker and gardener, and she loved her dogs. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Carl Frederick Casida. Joanne is survived by her son, Chris Johnson and wife Melodie; sister, Rebecca Keller and husband Robert; brother Michael Casida and wife Teresa; 4 grandsons, Alan Misenhelter, Gregory Misenhelter, Brent Misenhelter, and Cory Johnson; nieces and nephews Allison Klein, Nathan Temple, Scott Keller, Kim Casida, David Casida, Michael Casida, Jonathon Casida. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, 219 S. Oak Stret, Garnett, KS 66032. The family will greet friends following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Action and left in care of the funeral home.
