Joe Sutherland

Joe Cortner Sutherland, age 81, of Iola, Kansas, passed away February 20, 2025, at St. Luke's Hospital - Plaza, Kansas City, Missouri. Joe was born at St. John's Hospital on May 3, 1943, in Iola, Kansas, to Charles L. Sutherland and Gladys V. (Cortner) Sutherland.

Joe attended school in Iola with the class of 1961. He and Lynne Sutton were married July 7, 1974, in Iola, Kansas.

Joe was a dairy farmer until 1995 when the cows were sold. He continued row crop farming with his brother, son, and nephew until his passing. Joe lived on the family farm for 64 years until the flood of 2007 caused him to move north of Iola. Besides farming, he enjoyed operating his bulldozer.

Joe was a member of the Iola First Presbyterian Church, where he served as elder, deacon, and doing whatever else needed to be done.

Joe enjoyed life! He was a heart transplant recipient, having received his new heart on August 16, 2003.

Joe was an avid tractor collector, collecting big tractors and toy tractors. He also had a 1965 Chevelle that he liked to drive around the town square. He enjoyed spending time with his grandkids and watching them play sports and show livestock at the fairs. He liked cruising around in his side-by-side with his 4-legged buddy, Sadie The Lady.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Jeanie Sutherland, brother-in-law, John Divine; and niece, Erin Leigh Sutherland.

Joe is survived by his wife, Lynne; daughter, Jody (Richard) Parks; son, Chuck (Kristy) Sutherland; grandchildren, Breckon (Justin) Meins, Hallie Sutherland, Jadyn Parks, Rhett Parks; great-grandson, Wesley Leon Meins; sisters, Charlene (George) Levans, Anne Divine; brother, Richard (Paula) Sutherland; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 7, 2025, in The Venue at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, 1883 US Highway 54, Iola. A memorial service will be on Saturday, March 8, 2025, 10:30 a.m., at the Iola First Presbyterian Church. Inurnment will follow in Highland Cemetery, Iola, Kansas.

Memorials are suggested to the Southwind Extension District Education Foundation or Anderson County 4-H Council, and may be left with Feuerborn Family Funeral Service.
