John R. "Bob" McCord

d. January 1, 2012

John R. "Bob" McCord, age 81, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, May 31, 2012, at Anderson County Hospital Long Term Care in Garnett, Kansas. Bob was born on October 12, 1930, at Fort Scott, Kansas, the son of John S. and Francis (Heck) McCord. He graduated from Fort Scott High School, joining the Navy after graduation. He married Mary Elizabeth Meister, better known as Beth, on October 12, 1952, at Girard, Kansas. This union was blessed with three daughters, Nancy, Linda (who died in infancy), and Cynthia. Bob worked for KDOT for 38 years. He also owned a mower sales and service shop, Small Engine Service Company, for 29 years. The shop closed in 2007 because of ill health. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda; his parents; and two infant brothers. Bob is survived by his wife, Beth McCord, of the home; daughter, Nancy Foltz and husband Ray of Paola, Kansas; daughter, Cynthia Dietz of Kansas City, Kansas; one grandson, SSGT David Dietz, USMC; two granddaughters, Dezerae and Veronica Foltz of Paola, Kansas. Bob was a quiet man, didn't enjoy being in crowds but did enjoy small gatherings. He loved working on lawnmowers or anything with an engine; he also loved horses - he always had one as a kid. In later life, he again had horses; he so enjoyed going on trail rides with Nancy, Veronica and brother-in-law Eldon - especially if it was overnight and we used the Pop-up. Bob was a member of the First United Methodist Church; a 51 year member of Delphian Lodge #44, AF & AM; Scottish Rite, Fort Scott, Kansas; Mirza Shriners, Pittsburg; and Perfection Chapter #21, Paola, Kansas. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, June 7, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church in Garnett, Kansas. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m., at the Fort Scott National Cemetery in Fort Scott, Kansas. Family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Chancel Choir & Bell Choir Fund or to Delphian Lodge #44, AF & AM.
