John A. Egidy, age 89, of Greeley, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2013, at his home after a 24 year battle with cancer. He was born on January 11, 1924, in Greeley, Kansas, the son of William John and Agnes (Bauck) Egidy. John was united in marriage to Rosalind "Rosie" Hewlett on February 16, 1963, in Osawatomie, Kansas. This union was blessed with two sons, four daughters and fifty years of marriage. They made their home in Greeley, Kansas; farming was his life. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law, great-grandfather, and neighbor. He enjoyed working his land, interacting with his family, running his John Deere tractor and combine. In addition, he enjoyed reading the paper, watching his kids show livestock, play sports, fishing, visiting with his friends at the sale barn, talking about the weather, sharing a good conversation, enjoying chocolate cake and chocolate shakes. John raised Hereford cattle. He grew wheat, soy beans, red clover hay, and red clover seed. He instilled a strong sense of safety and values in all of his family. John had strong hands, a warm heart, blue eyes, a friendly smile, and a firm handshake. He was honest, hardworking, dedicated, and had a good sense of humor, strong religious beliefs, with an ornery side at times. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Agnes Egidy; one twin brother, William F. Egidy; two sisters, Stella Augle and Ida Funk Raitinger. John is survived by his wife Rosie Egidy of the home; two sons, John P. Egidy and wife Dawn of LaCygne, Kansas; Antonio F. Egidy and wife Lorien of Rose Hill, Kansas; four daughters, Brenda L. Spencer and husband Duane of Fontana, Kansas; Deborah D. Hulbert and husband Alan of Valley Center, Kansas; Dianna K. Meier and husband Patrick of Shawnee Mission, Kansas; Rhonda R. Egidy of Lenexa, Kansas; six grandchildren, LeeAnna Johnson, Rosanna Spencer, Miranda Spencer, Ashley Hulbert, Brandon Hulbert, Victoria Egidy; two step-grandchildren, Allison Meier and Emily Meier; two great grandchildren, Ninetta Johnson and Madison Johnson; his nephew, Lawrence "Bud" Raitinger and wife Lenna of Parker, Kansas; and niece, Mary Lou Muntzel of Belton, Missouri, and numerous other nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at St. John's Catholic Church in Greeley, Kansas. Burial will follow at the St. John's Cemetery in Greeley. A rosary will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday evening, with visitation following at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett.
