John Wesley Fickel

John Wesley Fickel, age 83, of Garnett, Kansas passed away at his home on Thursday, November 22, 2018.   Wes was born January 21, 1935 at Harrisonville, Missouri.  He was the second of six children born to Harry William Fickel Sr. and Mary Frances (Morgan) Fickel.  He grew up in the area of Louisburg and Somerset, Kansas.  He was in the Kansas National Guard, Battery C, 127th Field Artillery Battalion for several years. Wes married Shirley McDaniel on November 5, 1957 at Paola, Kansas.  They were blessed with two daughters, Tammie and Shellie.  They later divorced.  Wes drove a truck for several years for Hall’s Truck Line of Spring Hill, Kansas.  In 1975 Wes moved to Garnett from Paola and began working as a mechanic at Pointer Chevrolet in Garnett.  He then worked for several years at the power plant for the City of Garnett, retiring from there.  In his younger days enjoyed spending time with his family while camping and fishing.  He liked to tinker and fix things as well as collecting clocks.  Wes also enjoyed being able to connect with family and friends on the computer after his health prevented him from easily getting around.  He will be missed in the local convenience stores where he could be found visiting with friends and the employees while he purchased lottery tickets. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert. Wes is survived by his two daughters, Tammie Daulton and husband, Wayne of Osawatomie, Kansas and Shellie Hartmann of Garnett; five grandchildren, Joe Fickel, Wayne Daulton Jr., Annie Daulton-Kerr, Elizabeth Daulton, and Steven Hartmann; eight great-grandchildren, Jayde and Brendan Fickel, Kearston Bostick, Wyatt Daulton, L.J. and Brooklyn Kerr, Tyler and Olivia Wenski; two sisters and two brothers, Mary Ann Ostrander of Paola, Roger Fickel and wife, Helen of Olathe, Kanas, Harry Fickel Jr. of Paola, and Lois McAlexander and husband, George of Joplin, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, December 10, 2018, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas.  Family will greet friends from 10:00 AM until the time of service.  Inurnment will follow in the Paola Cemtery, 702 W.
