John Kersley

John Henry Kersley passed away at his home on Wednesday, October 28th, 2020 at the age of 53. John was born on October 2nd, 1967 in Wichita, Kansas. He was the son of Jane and Herb Kersley and the late John Shultz Jr. John graduated from Crest High School in Colony, Kansas in 1986.

During his senior year of high school, John enlisted in the United States Air Force. After basic training, he was stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri for four years. He then attended Fort Scott Community College and Allen County Community College. After college, he re-enlisted in the Air Force Reserves for another four years. He served at Richards-Gebaur in Kansas City, Missouri and Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. He spent 13 years as a police officer in Scott City, Garnett, and Wakeeney, Kansas, and in his later years worked as a security guard at Allied Alliance in Overland Park, Kansas.

John loved music of all kinds. He was an avid reader. He especially liked Tom Clancy’s books and reading classics to his children. He enjoyed watching the Kansas City Chiefs play football. He enjoyed playing guitar and singing occasionally. He will be remembered for playing practical jokes on those he loved.

John married Leah Heimlich in April of 1992. This union was blessed with three children. They later divorced. In 2007, John met his significant other, Sherry Hafliger. They have one son.

John is preceded in death by his biological father, John Shultz Jr.; grandparents, Wayne and Sylvia Wools, Wayne and Madeline Kersley; and two infant grandchildren, Jayden Smith and Garret Richmeier.

John is survived by his parents, Herb and Jane Kersley of Kincaid, Kansas; significant other of 13 years, Sherry Hafliger of Kincaid, Kansas; children, Alexa (Nick) Smith of Goodland, Kansas, Dylan Kersley of Hays, Kansas, Gavin Kersley of Alliance, Nebraska, Dalton Kersley of Kincaid, Kansas; step-children, Kaitlyn (James) Richmeier of WaKeeney, Kansas, and Maddison Halfliger of WaKeeney, Kansas; grandchildren, Bentley, Jacksyn, and Lyncoln Smith and Emma Richmeier; siblings, Stephanie Kersley of Taos, New Mexico, Jacob Kersley of Portland, Oregon, Angela (Randy) Slocum of Iola, Kansas, and Nickole (Ryan) Herder of Chanute, Kansas, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and other family members.

A funeral service in honor of John will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, November 6, 2020 at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service in Iola, Kansas. John will lie in state on Thursday, November 5, 2020 from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
