John Francis Shields, age 68, of Iola, Kansas, passed away on April 13, 2025, in Kansas City, Missouri, surrounded by his loved ones. John was born in Saint Joseph, Missouri, to Robert and Patricia (Adams) Shields.
A man of service, dedication, and kindness, John lived a life devoted to his country, community, and family. He proudly served in the United States Navy for 22 years, retiring with honors at the rank of Chief Petty Officer. After his military service, he transitioned into a career as a real estate agent, helping countless families find their homes. His commitment to service extended further when he played a vital role in aiding communities while working with FEMA. Some of his work included assisting those in Iola and Southeast Kansas affected by the devastating floods. John was a proud member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
Later in life, John became a beloved substitute teacher, earning the admiration and affection of his students. He had a gift for inspiring young minds, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of learning from him. His passion for community service led him to serve as the President of the Kiwanis Club, where he worked tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of others.
Above all, John's greatest role was that of a devoted son and caretaker to his parents. He not only provided for them but also became his mother's closest friend, sharing a bond of love and companionship that was truly special.
John's legacy is one of unwavering dedication, kindness and selflessness. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the many lives he touched throughout his journey.
John was preceded in death by his father, Robert P. Shields; sister, Linda Walter; two brothers Timothy and Robert Shields.
John is survived by his mother, Patricia Shields of Iola; and two brothers and two sisters, Mary Weatherman and husband, Neal of Eudora, Kansas, Michael Shields and wife, Denise, of Richmond, Texas, Barbara Andrews and husband, Tim, of Conway, Arkansas, and Richard Shields and wife Kimberly, of Clinton, Missouri; brother-in-law, Earl Walter of Iola; sister-in-law, Dawn Bishop of Brewster, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews, who John enjoyed a special bond with.
Mass of Christian of Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, April 26, 2025, at St. John's Catholic Church, 310 S. Jefferson, Iola, Kansas. John's family will greet friends following the service in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to A.C.A.R.F. or the Pregnancy and Family Center of Iola and may be sent in care of Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, 1883 US Hwy 54, Iola, KS 66749.
