Joyce Lynn Hastert, age 78, of Greeley, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2018, at Residential Living Center, Garnett. She was born March 31, 1939, in Ottawa, the daughter of Irwin W. and Berniece Joy (Brown) Benefiel. She graduated from Garnett High School with the Class of 1957. On July 20, 1957, Joyce married Dennis Hastert at Holy Angels Church, Garnett. This union was blessed with four children. They made their first home in Wichita until Dennis was drafted into the U.S. Army in February of 1958. When he was discharged, they made their home in the Greeley area where they spent their entire life farming and raising their family on that same farm. Joyce worked at the Ben Franklin store, then worked at the Anderson County Appraiser's Office for many years. She worked at Garnett State Savings Bank for many years before retiring on March 31, 2004. She enjoyed reading, fishing, cooking, working crossword puzzles, going to the casino's with her friends and family, and watching sports on T.V. Joyce was on a bowling team for several years and attended many state tournaments. She was known to always have a hot meal for her family when they would come in from working the fields, no matter what time of the day or night. Even when friends and family would stop by, she would make sure they did not leave hungry. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Irwin and Berniece Benefiel; father, Glenn Stanley; husband, Dennis Hastert on January 6, 2017; and one brother-in-law, Tom Martin. Joyce is survived by her four children, Dennis Hastert Jr. and Mary Koch of Garnett, Kansas, Anthony "Merle" Hastert of Overland Park, Kansas, Mike Hastert and Renee Bellerive, Susan Grant and husband, Bill, all of Garnett, Kansas; 12 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gayle Larsen and husband Don of Seattle, Washington; and Betty Martin of Topeka, Kansas; brother, Wayne Stanley and wife Glenda of Garnett, Kansas; numerous nieces and nephews, and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, Garnett, with burial following in the Holy Angels Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 12:30 until time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to Greeley First Responders.
