Judy Thyer

June 20, 1940 — September 12, 2024

Judith Ann Thyer, age 84, passed away on September 12, 2024 at her apartment in Spring Hill, Kansas after a short illness. Judy was a long-time resident of Iola and Blue Mound, who moved to Spring Hill in August.

Born June 20, 1940 at her Grandma Thompson's home East of Kincaid, she was the daughter of Lester Wayne Holman and Matilda Alice (Thompson) Holman. Judy grew up in Allen, Neosho, and Anderson counties and graduated from Welda High School in 1959.

She married Robert Joe Thyer on July 4, 1963 at her parents' home in Welda. They raised their four children on the family farm at Blue Mound, Kansas. Her gardening and cooking skills kept the family well fed, and there was always room for one more at her table. Many of the Thyer and Holman cousins have childhood memories of summer days on the farm thanks to Aunt Judy's hospitality.

Judy was a member of the Prairie Valley Quilting Circle, Blue Mound Lady Lions, and Friends of the Library. She served as forestry leader when her kids were in 4-H. Judy and Bob enjoyed square dancing and playing pitch with friends, and they celebrated their anniversary every year by helping with the Blue Mound 4th of July celebration.

She made many friends in her 36 years as a librarian. Judy served as the librarian at Blue Mound for 18 years. Bob and Judy moved to Iola, Kansas in 1991, where she worked at the Iola Public Library for another 18 years.

She retired in 2009, and loved having the time to attend her grandkids' activities and celebrate their successes. She enjoyed spending time in Montana and Alabama in her later years. She was a living history volunteer interpreter at Nevada City Living History Museum in Montana. Judy's craft room was her happy place, where she spent many hours sewing, quilting, crafting, and crocheting gifts for her family and friends.

She attended church at the First Christian Church in Iola, and Grace Community Church of the Nazarene in Spring Hill.

Judy was preceded in death by her husband, parents, her sister Nina Baker, brother David Holman, and her great-granddaughter Eleanor Thyer.

She is survived by her sons Dan (Brenda) Thyer of Ennis, MT; Joe (Stacy) Thyer of Mound City, KS; Jeff (Susanna) Thyer of Pittsburg, KS; daughter Rebecca (Rich) Fawcett of Spring Hill, KS; grandchildren Duel Thyer, Caleb Thyer, Casey (Lindsey) Thyer, Calvin Thyer, Dylan (Anh) Thyer, Emily (Oliver) Candido, Logan (Stephanie) Fawcett, and Alanna Fawcett; great grandchildren Cadence Fawcett; Palmer Thyer; Ryan, Chase, and Kolby Candido and a great grandson on the way; sisters Delores Bishop and Linda Graham; brothers Paul and John Holman, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
