Larry Gene Foster, age 80, passed away November 9, 2023, at his home in rural Iola surrounded by family. He was born on Armistice Day, November 11, 1942 at St. John's Hospital, Iola, Kansas, the son of Benjamin Thurston and Grace Martha (Cornell) Foster.
He attended rural schools in Allen County, Kansas, and later LaHarpe High School, LaHarpe, Kansas and Neosho High School, Neosho, Missouri, later earning his GED.
On November 23, 1963, he married Joyce Cecelia King at St. John's Catholic Church in Iola. They spend a short time in Independence, Kansas while he worked on the Elk City Dam and Reservoir, moving back to Iola in 1965. He began employment with Nelson Brothers (now Nelson Quarries) in 1960, crushing and hauling rock and was part of a work crew assisting construction of many highways and dams in Kansas and Missouri. He later worked for General Repair and Supply, Iola Grain, J & W Equipment and then KDOT for 19 years, retiring as an Equipment Operator Senior in 2007.
Larry enjoyed fishing and hunting, nature, working in his shop repairing and fabricating, and enjoying the company of his cats.
He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Iola.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Donald Ray Foster (1967-1980); three brothers, Benjamin Thurston Foster, Jr., Albert William Foster, George Lane Foster; and sister, Martha McGaugh.
Larry is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joyce C. Foster; two sons, Daniel G. (Michelle) Foster of Overland Park, Kansas, and Andrew L. Foster (Denise Leinen) of Olathe, Kansas; two grandchildren, Justin A. (Amanda) Foster of Overland Park, Kansas, and Amanda D (TJ) Ridge of Overland Park, Kansas; two great-grandchildren, Carter and Kinsley Ridge; sister, Nancy Teal of Chanute, Kansas; brother, Kenneth E. Foster of Conway Springs, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews.
A Rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 14. 2023, at St. John Catholic Church, Iola, Kansas. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at St. John Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, Iola, Kansas.
