Larry Dean Stockebrand, age 68, passed away peacefully at his home in Yates Center, Kansas, on April 11, 2025.

Larry was born as Larry Dean Fencl, on December 25, 1956, in Iola, Kansas to Carolyn Ann (Johnson) Fencl and James Lindberg Fencl.

Larry attended school in Washington and Belleville, Kansas before moving to Iola during his 8th grade year. The family moved to Yates Center when his mother married Deed Stockebrand. Deed adopted Larry and his sister Karen, and they all lived on the Stockebrand family homestead in rural Woodson County. Larry graduated from Yates Center High School with the class of 1974. He attended Fort Scott Community College on a basketball scholarship, where he also played baseball and played the tuba in the band. He then attended Emporia State University for physical education. Upon graduation Larry began teaching K-8 P.E. in the Yates Center Elementary School for Woodson County USD #366, where he taught for 38 years. Larry encouraged personal fitness in his students, and for many of those years Larry and his students participated in Jump Rope for Heart and Saint Jude Bike-a-Thons fundraising activities. He was the assistant coach, and then the head coach, for the high school boys' basketball team for several years. He also coached middle school girls' track and was an assistant coach in many other sports. Larry also enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, dancing, and gardening.

In 1977, Deed married Betty (Gustin) Sowder who brought five step-siblings to the family. Larry married Janet Brilke in 1983, and they had three boys.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, James, Deed, and Betty.

He is survived by his mother, Carolyn; sons, Eric (Michelle) Stockebrand of Pittsburg, Kansas, Steven (Sabra) Stockebrand of Piqua, Kansas, and Paul (Donicia) Stockebrand Beloit, Kansas; three grandchildren, Eric Andrew, Kennadi De'An, and Gracie Su'An Stockebrand; his siblings, Karen Rienbolt (Ken), Carey Sowder, Jana Slagle, Rhonda Trahan, Susan Mulsow, and Annette Van Anne (FJ); and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Services for Larry will be held on Monday, April 21, 2025 at 10:00 AM at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, 1883 US Highway 54, Iola Kansas, conducted by Pastor Bruce Johnson. Burial will immediately follow at Turkey Creek Cemetery in Northwest Woodson County. The family suggests memorials be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and these may be left in the care of funeral home staff. Condolences can be left at www.feuerbornfuneral.com.
