LaVerne Riley, age 77, of Iola, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at the Allen County Regional Hospital. LaVerne was the third child of eleven children born to Robert and Lucy (Humphrey) Lane. She was born on February 13, 1939 in Cape Giradeau, Missouri. As a young girl LaVerne lived in Memphis, Tennessee and St. Louis, Missouri. She married Robert Lee Riley on June 11, 1955 in Mississippi. This union was blessed with five children. They initially made their home in St. Louis, later moving to Westphalia, Kansas in 1972. Followning the death of her husband, LaVerne moved to Iola. Throughout her career she worked as a CNA and as an Activities Director. She worked at Windsor Place in Iola and Lifecare Center in Burlington. LaVerne was a talented artist, working in oil paints. She enjoyed painting pictures and sharing them with friends and family. LaVerne was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, on October 30, 2009; an infant daughter; four sisters Mickey Barlow, Vickey Bruner, Ellen Fulkerson, and Ann Conaway. She is survived by four sons, Rick Riley and wife, Norma of Iola, Kansas, Joe Riley and Megan Plumb of Platte City, Missouri, Michael Riley and Jenny Doolittle of Iola, Kansas, and Brian Riley and Sarah Ortiz of Humboldt, Kansas; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; six sisters Ruthie Neuman of Suwanee, Georgia, Bobby Counce of Iuka, Mississippi, Kay Polac of St. Louis, Missouri, Barbie Eberle of Winchester, Virginia, Pammy Cloutier of Cummings, Georgia, and Cindy Powell of Colony, Kansas. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, January 9, 2017, at the Fellowship Regional Church, Iola. The family will greet friends from 3:00 – 5:00 PM, Sunday, January 8, 2017, at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, Iola. Memorials are suggested to Hope Unlimited and may be left with the funeral home.
