Douglas Leon Benjamin, age 81, of Garnett, Kansas, died on Friday, May 15, 2009, at St. Luke's South Hospital in Overland Park, Kansas. Leon was born, April 6, 1928 at Garnett, Kansas, the son of, Homer and Alice (Hartman) Benjamin. Leon grew up on a farm south of Garnett. He graduated from Garnett High School in 1946. On June 1, 1952 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Owens. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, June 1, 2002. After school Leon tried several jobs before returning to the farm, where he was the happiest. He loved to plant pop corn to share with family and friends. He wanted to be known as the "pop corn man". Leon also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and her husband, Lucille and Charlie Hardman, and a sister-in-law, Norma Benjamin. Leon is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy, of the home; his brother, Leonard, of Garnett, and his nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Garnett Cemetery. Leon will lie in state after 11:00 AM, Sunday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America or to the Anderson County Hospital Scholarship Fund, and sent in care of the funeral home.
