Leon David Hay, age 74, of LaHarpe, Kansas, passed away Saturday, August 3, 2019, at Diversicare in Chanute, Kansas. Leon was born May 20, 1945, in Iola, Kansas, to James B. Hay and Florence L. (Morrison) Hay. Leon grew up on a farm in the Diamond Community.
Leon graduated from LaHarpe High School, LaHarpe, Kansas. He joined the United States Naval Reserve in June 1963, from which he was honorably discharged in July 1964.
Leon and Laurel (Morton) Hay were married on May 14, 1971, in Logan, Utah. Leon served a work mission in Roy, Utah, for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, for which he was a member. Leon and Laurel have lived in LaHarpe for the past 32 years.
Leon collected stamps and coins. He enjoyed electric train sets and radio-controlled airplanes. Leon liked old cars and attending car shows. He enjoyed the company of his family and grandchildren, and he enjoyed family reunions. Leon liked road-trips and vacations.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents; and son-in-law, Jimmy Kilby.
Leon is survived by his wife, Laurel, of 48 years; two daughters, Ruth Phillips and husband, Heath, Merriam, Kansas, Lisa Kilby, Iola, Kansas; four grandchildren, Reese Robert Phillips, Symphony Ann Phillips, Asha Maria Kilby, Christopher Alan Kilby; sister, Joyce Lee and husband, Harry, LaHarpe, Kansas; and numerous other relatives.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 8, 2019, in The Venue at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, 1883 US Highway 54, Iola, Kansas. A funeral service to honor Leon’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 9, 2019, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1420 East Carpenter Street, Iola, Kansas. Burial will follow in the LaHarpe Cemetery, LaHarpe, Kansas.
