Leonard Benjamin, age 82, of Garnett, Kansas, died on October 30, 2010, at his home. He was born April 6, 1928, in Garnett, Kansas, the son of Homer and Alice (Hartman) Benjamin. Leonard graduated from Garnett High School with the class of 1946; he then attended college at Pittsburg State University for one year. He married Norma Boots on July 16, 1950 in Garnett, Kansas. This union was blessed with one daughter, Jerilyn. In the early 1950's, Leonard purchased the Skelly Station in Garnett, owning and operating it for 25 years. He then worked in the oil fields around Garnett for 8 years before going to work for the City of Garnett at the power plant, retiring in 1995. Leonard loved farming, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his friends at The Oasis. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Alice Benjamin; his wife, Norma Benjamin on March 17, 1996; one brother, Leon Benjamin; one sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Charlie Hardman. Leonard is survived by his daughter Jerilyn Scurlock and husband Mike of Plainfield, Illinois; two grandchildren, Brenna Scurlock of Chicago, Illinois and Tracy Scurlock of Plainfield, Illinois; his dear friend, Dorothy Dice of Garnett; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Benjamin of Garnett. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, Garnett with burial following in the Garnett Cemetery. Friends may pay their respects at the funeral home after 8:00 AM, Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
