Les Mead, age 61, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2009 at St. Luke's Plaza Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri, with his daughter, Lisa at his side. Les was born on May 10, 1948, in Weleetka, Oklahoma, the son of Howard Mead and Wanema Owens Mead. He graduated from Ajo High School Ajo, Arizona. He joined the United States Army in 1968. Les was united in marriage to Carla Celeya. This union was blessed with two children. Following his time in the service the family lived in Arizona before moving to Garnett in 1977. After moving to Garnett Les worked as a heavy equipment operator during the construction of the Wolf Creek Power Plant. He later worked as a crane operator all over the United States before returning to Wolf Creek in 2005. He was married to Susan Keith Uriarte on December 27, 1996, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Les was a member of Local Union 101. He was a member of the Garnett American Legion and the American Legion Riders as well as the Patriot Guard. Les loved motorcycling, but his greatest joy was watching his children and grandchildren's activities. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard Mead in 1967 and Wanema Mead Webster in 2003; and his two brothers, C.W. and Leon. Les is survived by his wife, Susan Mead, of the home; his daughter Lisa Meeker of Garnett; his son, Willie Mead and wife Connie of Garnett; stepdaughter Sara Uriarte and husband Adam Miller of Riverside, California; five grandchildren, Tyler Meeker, Kyle Meeker, Cody Meeker, Hannah Mead, and Zack Mead; one great grandson, Landon Schillig; and one sister, Janice Sanchez and husband Sonny of Phoenix, Arizona, as well as many other family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 19, 2009, at the Garnett Church of the Nazarene in Garnett, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Garnett Cemetery. Family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday evening at the funeral home in Garnett.
