Leta Lucille Shinkle, age 74, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on April 17, 2009 at the Golden Heights Living Center, Garnett, Kansas. She was born on May 2, 1934, in Scipio, Kansas, the daughter of Leo Ferdinand and Magdalina Mary (Mersman) Steinbacher. She grew up in the Scipio and Garnett area, graduating from Garnett High School in 1952. Leta was united in marriage to Richard Franklin Shinkle on July 7, 1952, at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Garnett, Kansas. This union was blessed with six children. She worked as an Account Representative at the Anderson County Hospital from 1968 until December of 2008. In 2003, Leta turned her love of antiques and auctions into a business, "Miss Molly's Cottage". She operated the business until February 2009 when her health prevented her from continuing. Leta was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church in Garnett, and the Holy Angels Altar Society, she was a past 4-H Leader, bridge club, neighborhood birthday club, Deer Creek Boosters E.H.U., and a member of Advancer's Club. She enjoyed antiques, sewing, and flowers, but her greatest joy was her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dick Shinkle on May 2, 1999; and her sister, Helen Elizabeth Schroeder. Leta is survived by her children, Angie Price and husband Brian of Garden City, Kansas; John Shinkle of Garnett, Kansas; Terry Shinkle and wife Kathy of Hayesville, Kansas; Fran Miller and husband Tim of Castaic, California; Claude Shinkle and Valerie Clark of Olathe, Kansas; and Shana Pedrow and husband Brian of Garnett, Kansas; five sisters, Ethel Miller Bryan of Osage City, Kansas; Jean Spengler of Kansas City, Missouri; Dorothy Whited of Kansas City, Missouri; Pauline Lamming of Kansas City, Missouri; and Roberta Steinbacher of Lakewood, Ohio; two brothers, Ray Steinbacher of Exmouth, Australia, and Joe Steinbacher of Kansas City, Missouri; fifteen grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at the Holy Angels Church, Garnett, Kansas. Interment will follow in the St. Boniface Cemetery, Scipio, Kansas. The family will greet friends following a rosary at 7:00 PM, Monday evening at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, Garnett. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Rose School.
