Lorraine Stewart

Lorraine Marie Miller and her twin sister, Kathryn Ann, were born on September 30, 1943, to Frank and Lois (Benjamin) Miller in Garnett, Kansas. The twins completed the Miller family that included brothers Gerald and Richard. Lorraine grew up experiencing what she considered a perfect childhood centered around family life on the farm. She loved playing with her cousins, irritating her brother Richard, riding her pony and feeding baby calves. She often remarked that she thought they were rich because each Saturday when they went to town, she got a quarter with which she bought two comic books, two packs of gum, and two balloons. She also got to pick out the feed sacks, made of printed cotton cloth at that time. Grandma Miller would use them to make her new dresses to wear to Hyatt Club. Lorraine attended school at Hyatt and Welda in her early years, but attended high school in Garnett, where she enjoyed cheerleading and school dances. Upon graduating in 1961, she promptly moved to Kansas City with her best friend, JoAnne, where she met Terry Stewart. She said he was the best looking guy she'd ever met and he had a car. They married on February 25, 1962. Together they raised Cherie, Troy and Michelle. When very young, (Michelle was just a baby), the family moved to Loyal, Oklahoma. Lorraine began working as the school secretary very early in the school's history, 1970, and spent over 4 decades in that role. She retired twice, and even spent a year tutoring at the elementary school during one of her returns. Lorraine remained fiercely loyal to Lomega and was proud of having worked at the school. She loved the administrators she worked with, the teachers who were among her closest friends, the students who will always be hers, and Lomega basketball. She was a true fan of the coaches and the players, win or lose, and oh how she loved the state tournaments. Countless miles, hundreds of games, and the Granny van. She took special pride in the traditions of the school. She was always available to help in maintaining those traditions, whether she was needed to help cook, decorate or just direct traffic. Every event was special to her and she wanted every student's experience and memories to be special. She was a fixer of dresses and punch, admit writer, lunch money taker, cookie baker, hostess, greeter, lover of all things that make Lomega unique and special. Many, many names were stitched with love on state tournament banners.

Lorraine's hobbies over the years included woodworking, sewing and traveling. She developed her love of woodworking from her dad. She learned to sew from her mother. Her travels took her as far away as Europe. She loved adventure, making many memories with friends, brothers and sisters-in-law over the years. Lorraine loved her family. She was really good at maintaining relationships. Her sister-in-law Dorothy has been her friend since elementary school. She regularly reunited for traveling with her closest high school friends. Locally, many of her dearest friendships started long ago, beginning when she first moved to Loyal, and they were all in their mid-twenties. Some developed through her work at the school. And many of the students who walked the halls of Lomega remained life-long friends. She had spidey senses about which kiddos needed her friendship and a little extra attention.

A few things many of you may or may not know about Lorraine:

She loved chocolate and coffee.

She considered potato chips and a Snickers bar a great meal.

She recorded an album with her cousins Patty and Susie.

She hated vegetables except for potatoes.

She could twirl a baton and was really good at it.

She played the accordion as well as the piano.

She danced on American Bandstand.

She really loved Elvis, so much that her shelties were named Elvis and Priscilla.

If you were a high school student while she worked there, you remained a high school student forever in her eyes.

Lorraine left us on May 29, 2024 at age 80.

She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 40 years, Terry Max Stewart; her parents, Frank and Lois Miller; twin sister Kathryn; brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Virginia Miller; brother-in-law, Roger Stewart; sister-and brother-in-law, Bob and Arlette Liebl; nephews Randy Miller and Gerry Miller.

Those left behind with loving memories include her brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Dorothy Miller; her children, Cherie (Mark) Ingram, Troy (Debbie) Stewart, and Michelle (Randy) Wiens. Her grandchildren, Jennifer Ingram, Randy (Samantha) Ingram, Weston Ingram, Greg Wiens, Austin Worley and fiance Jessica Shackleford, Hunter Wiens (Jaden McMullin), Baleigh Stewart (Cameron Barnes), Rachel (Koby) Williams, Sarah Ratliff (Rulon Jessup), her great grandchildren, Madalynn Hutchins, Kambri and Max Ingram, and baby Williams due in December. She will also be missed by her greater family including her beloved uncle, Paul Phares, nieces, nephews and cousins she loved so dearly and a host of friends that she treasured.
