Louie Mumma, age 83, of Garnett, Kansas, died on Tuesday, September 1, 2009, at his home. He was born on April 2, 1926 at Garnett, Kansas, the son of Louie Preston Mumma and Marguerite H. (Fitsch) Mumma. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, for 6 years. He went from one war ship to another, serving on a total of 6 ships, including the U.S.S. Egeria, U.S.S. A.R.L.8; U.S.S. Palau; and U.S.S. C.V.E. 122. Louie was united in marriage to Margaret Bell Magill on October 3, 1969, at Emporia, Kansas. They lived in Ottawa, Kansas for 38 years, and then moved back to Garnett in the spring of 1988. He had his own business, working as an electrician, and specialized in heating and air conditioning. Louie was a lifetime member of Ottawa VFW #5901, and a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church. Both he and Margaret volunteered for ARC Thrift Shop for several years, and he helped out as a handy man. Louie was a very good cook, and he loved to make bread for his family, friends, and nurses. He enjoyed animals, especially dogs and birds, fishing, gardening, working with plastic canvas, and anything with moving parts. Louie was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Sylvia M. Welborn and Helen L. Hanes; and one brother, Charley R. Mumma. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Mumma, of the home; children, Vicki Lynn Shephard and husband Raymond of Southern Pines, North Carolina; Kenneth Preston Mumma and wife Deanna of Emporia, Kansas; Douglas Edward Mumma of Overland Park, Kansas; Deborah Ann Burns and husband Randy of Ottawa, Kansas; Patricia McAninch and husband Richard of DeSoto, Kansas; Donna Lear and husband Jerry of Ottawa, Kansas; John Charles Swallow, Jr. of Lawrence, Kansas; Michael Joseph Swallow and wife Jeanece of Garnett, Kansas; one brother, Leonard L. Mumma of Wichita, Kansas; nineteen grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 4, 2009, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Garnett Cemetery.
