Lucile I. Burke, 86, of Iola, Kansas, died Saturday, August 22, 2009, at the Allen County Hospital in Iola. Lucile was born December 16, 1922, at Macon, Georgia, the daughter of Randolph Elton and Lillian Myrtle (Gray) Thompson. She grew up in the Macon area. On November 1, 1941, Lucile married Robert E. Burke in Alabama. After World War II, they made their home in Georgia for five years before moving near Chicago, Illinois, where they lived for twenty-five years. She had worked as a keypunch operator for General Electric. In 1976, they moved to a home east of Humboldt, Kansas where Mr. Burke worked as a plumber. He preceded her in death on February 7, 1991. Lucile moved to Iola to make her home. She loved to write poetry and had some of her work published. VISITATION: 6:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola, Kansas GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 9:00 a.m., Thursday, August 27, 2009, at the Ft. Scott National Cemetery. Chaplain Lloyd W. Houk will officiate. The procession will leave the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel by 8:00 a.m. on Thursday.
