Margaret E. "Peggy" Hoffman, 89, of Iola, Kansas, died Monday, May 26, 2014, at Allen County Regional Hospital. Margaret was born March 13, 1925, on the family farm north of Iola, the daughter of Lewis A. and Florence (Rivers) Howland. She grew up on the farm, attended North Maple Grove School, Iola Junior High School and graduated from I.H.S. in 1943. She continued her education completing two terms to earn her teaching certificate. She taught at Pleasant Valley and Rock Creek Schools west of Iola. In 1946, Peggy married Richard C. Jones. They made their home in Iola before moving to Nevada, Missouri and later Carthage, Missouri. She worked at a hat factory in Nevada, sold real estate and worked at Ozarkland at Carthage. Richard preceded her in death in 1967. Margaret returned to Iola in 1970 and worked for her brother, John Howland, at H & H Drive-In. On February 14, 1971, she married Verle Hoffman and they made their home in Iola and operated State Street Motor Co. until 1995. Verle preceded her in death August 2, 2007. SURVIVORS: 1 Daughter: Debby Mayers & husband, Dale of Haskell, OK 1 Son: Rod Jones of Carthage, MO 1 Step-Son: Harold Hoffman & wife, Jill of Gas, KS 1 Sister: Jean Ansell of Kansas City, MO 9 Grandchildren: Christy Rehn, Mindy Obney, Dennis Morris, Michelle Bollig, Tiffany Hughes, Tammy Prather, Heather Burgett, Ryan Hoffman and Sarah Hoffman 12 Great Grandchildren: Courtney, Kristen, Emma, Ethan, Conner, Trevor, Gunner, Addy, Briley, Frederick, Oliver and Elizabeth. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, an infant sister Mary Emily Howland and brothers Lewis R. Howland, Paul Howland and John Howland. VISITATION: 5:00-7:00 p.m., Friday, May 30, 2014, at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola. FUNERAL SERVICE: 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 31, 2014, at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola. BURIAL: Highland Cemetery, Iola, Kansas MEMORIAL: First Assembly of God Memorial gifts may be left with the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel of Iola, which is in charge of arrangements.
