Maria Mashelle Hastert, age 60, of Paola, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, February 2, 2020, at her home.
Mashelle was born January 19th, 1960 in Garnett, Kansas to Norman and Jo Lene (Ralston) Johnston. She was raised on a dairy farm outside of Lane, Kansas. She attended Central Heights School graduating with the class of 1978. On July 22, 1978 Mashelle was united in marriage to Dennis Hastert, Jr. Their union was blessed with three sons Jace, Adam and Ryan. She was a homemaker until the boys started elementary school. Mashelle later worked for King Radio, Benjamin Franklin, USD #365, Crabtree & Harmon and Aldi Distribution. In 2011, she earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting from Baker University. When the boys were young, Mashelle enjoyed many outdoor activities including camping and canoeing trips with family, and raising a vegetable garden. She was also an avid bowler for several years. Dennis and Mashelle owned and operated Smoke N Hope Barbeque in Osawatomie until they divorced in 1998. After her sons were raised, she enjoyed playing darts, motorcycle trips, spending time with her grandchildren, helping friends with their taxes and sewing. Mashelle loved live music and spending time with her friends, but when Willie Nelson music was added to the occasion it made a good day a great day.
She was preceded in death by her father, Norman Johnston, stepfather, Henry Thoele, brother, Daniel Johnston and Velda Lee ”Granny” Ralston.
Mashelle is survived by her three sons, Jace Hastert and wife, Tiffany, of St. Mary’s, Georgia, Adam Hastert and wife, Melanie, of St. George, Kansas, and Ryan Hastert and wife, Laney, of North Franklin, Connecticut; seven grandchildren Kayla, Ella, Logan, Grady, Kane, Grant & Avery; her mother, Jo Lene Thoele; stepmother, Darcy Johnston; siblings, Henry Thoele and wife, Theresa, Debbie Johnston and John Stahl, Renee Keele and husband, Rocky, Mary Johnston, Bryan Johnston and wife, Jessica, Aaron Johnston, Carol Fletcher and husband, John, Annette Oram and husband, Sam, Terry Thoele and wife, Anita, Rick Watson, Steve Watson and Linda Crouch; sister-in-law, Glenda Johnston; many nieces & nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, February 6, 2020, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, Garnett, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Lane Cemetery, Lane, Kansas. Mashelle’s family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Wednesday evening at the funeral home. The family suggests donations to the Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Patients in Need fund at The University of Kansas Health System.
