Marilyn Jeanette Murphy, 78, of Savonburg, Kansas, died at Diversicare in Haysville, Kansas, on Thursday, August 18, 2016. Marilyn was born November 2, 1937 at Lindsborg, Kansas, the daughter of Clarence and Luella (Linderholm) Carlson. The Carlson family moved to the Elsmore area in 1941. Marilyn graduated from Elsmore High School in 1955 and Allen County Community Jr. College in 1957. She worked at the Allen County Hospital and at Dr. Eugene Myer's office part-time while going to college. Marilyn married Harlan Murphy at the Friends Home Lutheran Church in Savonburg, Kansas on July 14, 1957. This union was blessed with four children. In 1961, they bought a farm west of Elsmore where they lived and operated a farm for 55 years. Marilyn was a member of Friends Home Lutheran Church. She served as a Sunday School teacher and treasurer, and Luther League sponsor. She was church secretary for 21 years. She also belonged to Dorcas Society and Women of the ELCA (WELCA). Marilyn enjoyed her family and two grandchildren. She enjoyed working with her flowers and yard. She enjoyed crafts, and decorating her yard and home for holiday celebrations. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, her infant brother, Richard Lee, and half-brothers, Richard Wilson, Larry Lawson, Dallas Carlson, sister-in-law, Betty Carlson, Alan Carlson, sister-in-law, Dorothy Carlson, Bertus Carlson, and Charles Carlson. Survivors include her husband, Harlan, three daughters, Kimberly Voth and husband Rod, Haysville, Kansas, Lisa VanRoekel and husband Cameron, grandsons Collin and Caleb, Silver Spring, Maryland, and Gina Murphy, Chanute, Kansas. She has one son, Harlan Lee Murphy and wife Jackie of Orlando, Florida and one brother, Emory Carlson of Delavan, Wisconsin. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 22, 2016, at Friends Home Lutheran Church, 3797 Arizona Road, Savonburg, KS 66772. Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m., Monday at the LeRoy Cemetery in LeRoy, Kansas.
