Marion Stoll

Marion Lee Stoll, 91, of Humboldt, passed away peacefully on Dec. 11, 2014, in Hospice at Windsor Place Care Home in Iola. Marion was born Oct. 17, 1923, in St. Clair County, Missouri, to John Frederick and Eunice Edith (Prier) Stoll. His father died when Marion was young, and he became the caregiver for his mother, eventually moving her and his younger brother, Leonard, to Brazilton, Kansas, to be near other relatives. All three were baptized in and became members of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Later, Marion spent three years in Colorado working for large farmers. For the rest of his life, he loved to visit with anyone who would listen about those days in Colorado. After his return from Colorado, he farmed with his brother Harold near Butler, Missouri. It was there he met and married Betty Belle Berry on March 10, 1956. While living in Butler, Marion and Betty's first daughter, Norma Jean, was born. They moved to Kansas in 1958 to be near Marion's sister Pauline and family. After moving to Kansas, two more daughters, Paula Sue and Carol Lee, were born to Marion and Betty. The family made their home in the Humboldt area the rest of his life. Marion was a hard-working man, often working a job in town, as well as farming. He hauled propane for Humboldt Coop in his early days in Kansas, and worked at various factories in Chanute. He raised registered Yorkshire hogs and cattle, and had a custom hauling business. In later years, he became sexton of Mount Hope Cemetery in Humboldt. Marion was a faithful member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Humboldt. He was able to retire while still in good health and spent many good years hunting deer, fishing, and enjoying coffee shop talk. He entered Windsor Place in 2011 following a sick spell. The staff of Windsor Place became like a second family to him. He was well known for all the pranks he played on the workers at Windsor. Marion is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty Stoll of the home in Humboldt; three daughters, Carol Stoll of the home, Paula Calvert of Winchester, Ky., and Norma Middendorf and husband, David, of Humboldt; five grandchildren, Jesse Calvert and wife, Katie, of Winchester, Hope Calvert of Winchester, Eric Middendorf and wife, Elizabeth, of Pittsburg, Kan., Adam Middendorf of Kansas City, Mo., and Cari Cusick and husband, Micah, of Newton, Kan. Marion was blessed with two great-granddaughters, Brooklyn Calvert of Winchester and Emma Cusick of Newton. Two additional grandchildren are expected in 2015. Marion is also survived by a sister-in-law, Bernice DeGraff of Clinton, Mo., and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Marion was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Clara Mae Russell and Pauline Hamm; and four brothers, Louis Stoll, Harold Stoll, Leonard Stoll, and infant brother Allen Stoll; one grandson, Israel Calvert; and many brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nephews, and nieces Services will be 1:30 p.m., on Sat., Dec. 13, 2014, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church.
