Martin A. Setter, age 90, of Greeley, Kansas, passed away on Monday, May 9, 2011, at the Allen County Hospital, Iola, Kansas Martin was born on January 17, 1921, at Scipio, Kansas, the son of Peter and Mary (Roecker) Setter. He grew up in the Scipio area, attending East Scipio School. Martin was drafted into the U.S. Army in August, 1942, where he reported to Fort Leavenworth. He was wounded in France during World War II and received a Purple Heart. Other medals and ribbons he was awarded include four Battle Stars, The European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, German Campaign, Sicilian Campaign, Naples-Foggia Campaign, and a Good Conduct Ribbon. He was honorably discharged in August, 1945. He returned to Greeley, where he farmed until he started his career as a substitute rural carrier at the Greeley Post Office in September, 1953. Martin retired from the U.S. Postal Service on January 5, 2001. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Scipio, Kansas. He enjoyed raising cattle and farming. Martin was preceded in death by his parents; brother Bernard Setter; sister Barbara Setter, and an infant sister. He is survived by his brother, David Setter and wife Ruth of Garnett, Kansas; and sister Agnes Setter of Iola, Kansas, and 7 nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, May 13, 2011, at the St. Boniface Catholic Church, Scipio, Kansas. Burial will follow in the St. Boniface Cemetery, Scipio, Kansas. The family will greet friends following a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday evening at the St. Boniface Church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Boniface Church.
