On July 30, 2015, Marvin Wayne Butcher was called to Heaven after valiantly fighting cancer. He was at home surrounded by family and friends, and was truly loved by all. Marvin was born on February 15, 1931 in Garnett, KS. He loved telling stories about his childhood, which were full of adventures: from shooting his BB guns with Johnny Marmon, hunting and fishing on the bluff, catching rabbits in the snow with Bill Umbarger, and visiting around the pot belly wood stove at George Spindler's store. In high school he played football, basketball and track, enjoyed singing in a quartet, shooting pool in the pool hall, and experiencing perils of owning or co-owning old vehicles with friends Gene Goodall and Norman Harper. After graduating from Garnett High School in 1949, he enlisted in the Navy. His days in the Navy, and the friends he made on the USS Pine Island and the USS Point Cruz, were some of the finest memories of his life. They helped shape him into the amazing man he was. Patriotism and the love of his country defined his way of life. He was part of an experience on the USS Point Cruz whereby the ship adopted a baby from an orphanage in Korea where he wasn't being cared for. After much red tape such as getting a Visa, Passport, etc., he was allowed on board, and was off to America where he was adopted by a doctor from the medical ship. The sailors converted many things for the baby's use, including a baby carriage which was more often used to transport bombs to the airplanes. After the Navy, where he attained an EN2 rating, he attended Pittsburg Kansas State Teacher's College. He graduated in 1957, where he earned a BS degree in accounting. He worked in the accounting field at Hess Oil and then Tenneco Oil, where he retired in 1986. He had many interests: sailing, gardening, bowling, woodworking, traveling, singing in church choirs for many years and attending grandchildren's sporting events. Marvin is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Helen Thompson Butcher, sisters Jeanne Haines and Betty Wells, as well as his beloved dogs Missy and Penny. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jean Stockton Butcher, son Randy Everitt, and daughter Becky Sanders and husband John; five grandchildren Ashley Dixon, Melissa Everitt, Jill Sierra, Chad Sanders, and Kelly Sanders; ten great grandchildren Justin, Jordyn, Brody, Natalie Jean, Nina, Alana, Alize, Louis Jr., Jayden and Nolan, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 28, 2015, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas. Condolences may be sent to the family at
