Mary Ann Platt

February 12, 1953 — July 4, 2024

Mary Ann (Lutz) Platt passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2024, at Rock Creek of Ottawa in Ottawa, Kansas. She was born on February 12, 1953, in Garnett, Kansas, the sixth child of eight, born to Edward and Gertrude (Tillman) Lutz.

Mary Ann attended grade school at St.Teresa's Catholic School, secondary at Westphalia High School in Westphalia, and graduated from Garnett High School with the class of 1971. After graduation, she attended Allen County Community College and began a career as an EMT, after completing her board examination. Mary Ann was one of two female EMS Directors in the state of Kansas at that time, breaking the glass ceiling for women in Emergency Services. Mary Ann was the first EMT to teach first aide and field triage to the local Hunter Education classes and was influential in making the Kansas State hunter safety program what it is today. Later, she retired from the Franklin County Health Department as the Office Manager after 20 years of service.

Mary Ann was united in marriage to Joel L. Wight on September 11, 1971. This union was blessed with two children, Jason and Stephanie. She later married Clark Platt on December 10, 1988.

Mary Ann enjoyed the simple things in life, and her family was her everything. Her grandchildren, Weston and Max, were her prized possessions. She loved spending time on the patio with family, friends and a glass of wine. Planting flowers, gardening and watching NCIS was some of her favorite pastimes.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Jason; husband, Clark and five siblings.

Mary Ann is survived by her daughter, Stephanie and husband Casey Cary; bonus children, Danny, Deb, Michelle, Glen, Ronnie, Carol, Ray; grandchildren, Weston and Max; siblings, Sue Lutz and Larry Lutz; many bonus grandchildren and great- grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary Ann was one bad ass mom but also was a gentle, kind soul.
