Mary Margaret Branson Schornick, age 79, of Yates Center, Kansas, passed away September 21, 2023, at Yates Center Health & Rehab. Mary was born January 14, 1944, to John and Margaret (Allan) Branson in Eureka, Kansas.
She attended school in Eureka and graduated from Eureka High School in 1962. In 1966, she graduated from Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, Kansas, with a Bachelor of Science in Education. In 1969, Mary was awarded a Master of Science in Education, and in 1976, a Master of Science in Guidance and Counseling from Emporia State University.
Mary taught in elementary schools in Herington, Eureka, Wichita, and Yates Center. She retired in 2004 after 27 years as Elementary Counselor in Yates Center. Mary wanted her students to reach their full potential and was always willing to help with motivation.
Mary and Robert Schornick were married January 27, 1979, in Yates Center, where they made their home. A daughter, Sara Margaret, was born in October, 1981. Mary enjoyed following Sara's activities through high school, especially basketball games.
During college, Mary obtained her private pilot's license and enjoyed going to air shows to reminisce about flying with friends. Mary was an avid KU basketball fan. Rarely did she miss a game. The only time she would miss a KU basketball game was to watch her grandson in any of his activities.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and infant daughter, Teresa Ann Schornick.
Mary is survived by her husband, Robert, of the home; daughter, Sara (Darren) Davis; and grandson, her pride and joy, Alex Davis.
A Rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Yates Center, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. A private family inurnment will be at a later date in the Yates Center Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial to Friends For Life or St. Joseph Catholic Church (Yates Center) or to a Mass for the repose of the soul of Mary, which may be left with Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, 1883 US Highway 54, Iola, Kansas.
