Matthew Lee Travers, age 42, of Harris, Kansas, died on Thursday, July 9, 2009, at his home. He was the beloved son of Bill and Stephany Travers. Matthew was born on September 22, 1966 at San Jose, California. He married Tamara Johnson. They were divorced. He had one son, Isaac Eleazer Travers. Matthew received a B.A. from San Diego State University and a M.S. degree from National University. He began his teaching career in California. He taught Communication Arts at Blue Valley West High School in Overland Park. From the time he was young, he had a love for Jesus and was seeking a closer walk with God. Later as a result of his seeking, he came into contact with members of the Old German Baptist Brethren Church. He was baptized into this fellowship on October 4, 2001. He remained faithful. He was a devoted father and a dedicated teacher. His only son Isaac was the light of his life. Once you met Matthew, it became quickly obvious that he had many varied interests. Many of us knew him, simply as Matt. He had a keen love for the church. One of the ways this was manifested was the numerous articles written for the Vindicator, our monthly church paper. His latest article appeared in the July edition. He had an extensive interest in flowers and gardening. Another interest was current events and Biblical Archaeology. Matthew will always be remembered for his humor and positive outlook despite his health challenges. He is survived by his son Isaac of Leawood, Kansas; his parents, William and Stephany Travers; two sisters, Elisabeth Callahan and Christina Travers; one brother Jonathan Travers, all of San Diego, California; and a host of friends near and far. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2009, at the Old German Baptist Brethren Church in Westphalia, Kansas. The family will gather at the funeral home in Garnett at 9:00 a.m. and proceed to the church at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Bethel Cemetery, Westphalia, Kansas.
