Opal Maxine Adams, age 88, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, June 13, 2010, at the Anderson County Hospital Long Term Care Facility in Garnett, Kansas. She was born on October 6, 1921, in the Burns Community, Polk County, Missouri near Bolivar, the daughter of Fred Olin and Loah Claud (McReynolds) Abel. She attended area schools before graduating high school at Halfway, Missouri. Maxine was married to Harlan L. "Jack" Adams at Oswego, Kansas, on November 4, 1941. This union was blessed with seven children. While Jack was in the service, they lived in California until Jack went overseas. Following his return to the U.S. they lived in Indiana, West Virginia, and Washington before moving to rural Lone Elm, Kansas in 1946. In 1954, they moved to Colorado, living in Woodrow, Brush and Cortez. They moved back to Garnett in 1959. She was a homemaker, as well as working as the secretary for Adams Construction. After her children were grown she also worked for Warner Manufacturing for 17 years. Maxine was a member of the Southern Baptist Church, and she read the Bible daily. She enjoyed reading, genealogy, and sewing. She was the first reference book her children and grandchildren would turn to. Maxine loved being a mother and grandmother. She was a very strong person. Her family will miss her dry sense of humor. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jack Adams on December 8, 1996; infant son Halbert Lyndle Adams; grandson Allen Lutz; and great grandson Anthony Adams; three brothers, Carl, Paul and Wesley B.; four sisters, Vaden Anderson, Lucille Manes, Emma Lee Manes and Bertha Marie Deragowski. Maxine is survived by her children, Darlena Lutz and husband Richard of Garnett; Roger Adams and wife Phyllis of Garnett; Rolena Kennard and husband Lewis of Garnett; Berdena Kratzberg of Shawnee; Nina Underwood of Olathe, Kansas; Edythe Renay Jones and husband Lee of Burlington; three sisters, Eva Grace of Springfield; Lorine Taylor and husband Hershel of Strafford, Missouri; and Zona Meadors of Bolivar, Missouri; seventeen grandchildren, Gerald and Teena Lutz; Darin and Michele Lutz; Rodney Adams, Brenda Jenelle Adams, Latisha and Tom Hoffman, Roger, Kenneth, and Waylon Morse, Bridget and Matt Estell, Adrienne and Joe Kordalski, Angela and Calahn Luster, Tamara Kratzberg, Therese and Paul Rogers, Mark and Jen Underwood, Randy, Adam, and Travis Stahl; five step grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 18, 2010, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas. Burial will take place at 1:00 p.m. at the Highland Cemetery in Iola, Kansas. Family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday evening at the funeral home in Garnett. Memorial contributions may be made to the Maxine Adams Memorial Fund.
