Maxine Schoonover, age 87, of Stark, Kansas, passed away on Friday, January 26, 2018 at her home. Maxine was born to Daniel Ira and Violet (Parret) Schneeberger on January 22, 1931 in Caldwell, Kansas. Her family moved several times when she was a young girl, finally settling near Stark, Kansas in 1944, where she attended the Stark High School. On September 20, 1947 she married George Schoonover in Iola, Kansas. This union was blessed with three daughters, Jean, Helen and Judy. They first made their home on a farm between Stark and Savonburg, later moving to George’s parents farm in 1967, where Maxine lived out the rest of her life. Maxine and George operated their dairy farm for many years in addition to their farming operation. Maxine was a dedicated farm wife, working alongside George. After they ceased their dairy operation, Maxine worked as a cook at the hospital in Chanute for several years. Maxine was fifty plus year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Savonburg. Maxine liked to cook and work in her garden, but very few things in her life topped her cats. Maxine was a survivor. She survived a broken femur, two broken hips, lung surgery, recovering from all of those, but her stroke in 2015 was too much for her and she had to slow down. She was able to remain in her home due to the help of her granddaughter, Karen Cotton. Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, George, on May 17, 2004; daughter Judy Cooper on November 14, 2003; and her parents; one half-sister and one half-brother. She is survived by two daughters, Jean George and husband, Leon of Savonburg, Kansas, and Helen LaShay of Wichita, Kansas; five grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren; and four half-brothers and one half-sister, all of Oklahoma. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, January 30, 2018, at the Stark Friends Church in Stark. The family will greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Monday, January 29, 2018, at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service in Moran, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery at Savonburg, Kansas. Memorials are suggested to Stark Friends Church or West Cherry Animal Hospital, Chanute and may be left with the funeral home.
