Michael Scott Shirley, age 42, of Iola, Kansas, died Tuesday, February 10, 2009, at his home. Scott was born March 26, 1966, in Garnett, Kansas, the son of William A. and Roberta J. (Morgan) Shirley. He graduated from Iola High School in 1984 and then joined the United States Air Force where he served for over twenty-two years retiring as a master sergeant. He started his military career as a mechanic and then wrote technical manuals and repaired computers. After receiving a bachelor's degree in computer science from Park University and a master's degree in information systems from Webster University, Scott became the network administrator. Scott served in Desert Shield/Desert Storm, participated in operation Restore Hope in Somolia, and was involved in numerous humanitarian missions to Africa. On February 24, 1989, he married Lorraine M. Rible. They have made their home in Iola since 2005. Scott was presently employed by U.S.D. 257 as their technology director. He enjoyed bowling, golf, and coaching soccer. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church. SURVIVORS: Wife: Lorraine Shirley of the home 2 Daughters: Lydia M. and Clarissa S. The Rev. Robert B. Wachter will be celebrant. BURIAL: Highland Cemetery in Iola with military honors.
