Mildred Marie Velvick, age 91, of Garnett, Kansas, died on Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at her home in Garnett, Kansas. She was born on October 6, 1916, in Shubert, Nebraska, the daughter of Clyde Arthur and Lela Leona (Lord) Filmer. She lived in Shubert until moving to Peru in 1927. Mildred graduated from Peru High School at the age of 16. She then graduated from Peru State College in 1937. She also received her Masters Degree from Emporia State University. Mildred was united in marriage to Elmon M. Velvick on February 15, 1941, in Auburn, Nebraska. This union was blessed with three children. She taught school in Utica and Shickley, Nebraska before the family moved to Garnett, Kansas. After moving to Garnett, she taught Junior High History and Social Studies for 30 years before retiring in 1981. Her students were inspired by her teaching and she will be remembered for the influence she had on her students. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Chapter Y P.E.O., and Christian Crafters. She served as a Sunday School Teacher for many years at the First Christian Church. She was a talented seamstress, enjoyed painting and cooking, and she was an avid reader. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, infant Elaine Filmer and Irene Brown; one brother, Wayne Filmer; and her husband, Elmon Velvick on March 15, 1989. She is survived by one son, Jay Velvick and wife Barb of Garnett, Kansas; two daughters, Sherrie Brown of Garnett, Kansas; Jacalin Hiles and husband Robert of Richmond, Kansas; one brother, Rex Filmer and wife Ethel of Gretna, Nebraska; ten grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2008, at the First Christian Church in Garnett, Kansas. Burial will follow at the Garnett Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, July 25, 2008. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church or to Chapter Y P.E.O.
