Myrna B. Akers, 74, of Iola, Kansas, died Saturday, May 30, 2009, at the home of her daughter in Iola from complications of Aplastic Anemia. Myrna was born December 20, 1934, on a farm southeast of Humboldt in Allen County to Jacob Lyle and Grace Philena (Ladd) Thompson. She grew up on the farm east of Humboldt where she graduated from Bethel Grade School and from Humboldt High School in 1953. In November of 1954, Myrna married George M. Munson. They had one daughter before his death in February of 1956. Myrna married Earl D. Carlson in August of 1957. They made their home in the Elsmore area and had five children. They later divorced. She moved to Iola in 1991 and was married to James A. Akers in December of 1996. Myrna has worked as a switchboard operator at Humboldt, at H.L. Miller & Son Dress Factory, Allen County Hospital, Gates Rubber Co., Haldex, Tara Gardens and at McKinley Elementary School in Iola. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and had belonged to the Elsmore E.H.U. Myrna enjoyed gardening, fishing, playing games, crocheting, doing embroidery work and trying new recipes. She loved her family and attended all the events her children and grandchildren participated in. SURVIVORS: Husband: James A. Akers of the home 5 Daughters: Marlene Braker & husband, Tom of Ft. Scott, KS 1 Son: Craig Carlson & wife, Brenda of Ottawa, KS 2 Brothers: Roland Thompson & wife, Linda of Iola, KS; and Randall Thompson & wife, Liz of Arlington Heights, IL 17 Grandchildren: Emily Braker, Erica Braker, Jere Mills & wife, Julie, Jeff Mills, Justin Mills, Jena Mills, Kimberly Murry & husband, Aaron, Amanda Kyser, Ashley Toft, Elizabeth Carlson, Elisha Carlson, Kane Ekeland, Autumn Morrison, Andy See, Kyle Altic, Aubree Altic and Abby Altic 2 Great Grandchildren: Riley Murry and Reece Murry She was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeremy Braker VISITATION: 6:00-8:00 p.m., Wed., June 3, 2009, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola FUNERAL SERVICE: 10:00 a.m., Thurs., June 4, 2009, at the Humboldt United Methodist Church in Humboldt, KS BURIAL: Mount Hope Cemetery in Humboldt, Kansas MEMORIAL: Allen County Healthcare Foundation (Hospice) Memorial gifts may be left with the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel of Iola, which is in charge of arrangements.
