Nadine A. Peine, age 90, of Richmond, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 17, 2015, at Shawnee, Kansas with many members of her family present. She will be loved and missed by many. Nadine Alice Nelson was born on December 6, 1924. The only child born to Ollie (Goins) and George Nelson, she grew up on the Nelson farm in Harris, Kansas. Nadine always had an intense desire for quality education. As a teenager she stayed in the neighboring town of Garnett, boarding at the Murdock home during the week so she could attend high school. She graduated with her diploma in 1944. She then obtained her Kansas Teaching Certificate which enabled her to teach while earning her degree through Emporia State University. She began teaching second and third grade in Turner, Kansas. In doing so, she graduated with her Bachelor's degree in Education from Emporia State University in 1954. In August of the following year, she married Leo Peine, who was a local farmer and decorated military veteran near her hometown. They moved to the Peine farm west of Richmond, Kansas, and started their family. She took a brief reprieve from teaching while she raised her young children, Robert, Jim, Martha and Keith, and departed infant son John. Not only was she a farm wife and school teacher, she was also very involved in the farming community. She kept business records and always had a voice in the farm's next ventures with Leo. Nadine was eager to get back in the classroom though. Nadine taught throughout the rural USD 365 community for almost 25 years, spending her final years as a kindergarten teacher in Greeley, Kansas, retiring in 1980. Following her retirement she then took on her new project of reinvigorating the library in Richmond, which included, her advocating for a computer system there and delighting families with Story Hour, having up to 25 children at a time. She enjoyed this work until her retirement in 2003, when she was 79. Shortly after, she played a big part in developing the Richmond Community Museum, where she donated many of Leo's military artifacts and her wedding dress. She was a wonderful mentor, not only as a mother but also with the local 4-H club, and was a strong participating member in the St. Boniface Catholic Church and Altar Society. For many years Nadine assisted in the weekly Mass at Richmond Healthcare and Rehab. Leo and Nadine enjoyed a beautiful marriage for almost 40 years. In 1995, Leo passed away of cancer. Nadine remained on the farm for a few more years, assisting in managing the grounds with her eldest son, Robert. She then moved to a smaller home in Richmond where she continued to be an active member of the community. In 2013, Nadine moved to Kansas City where she was able to spend time with many of her family members. She also celebrated her 90th birthday surrounded by family and friends in December 2014. Nadine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leo A. Peine on September 25, 1995; an infant son, John Peine; son, Robert Peine in 2013. She is survived by her children, Jim Peine and his partner, Chuck Mallory, of Chicago, Illinois, Martha Baker and husband John of Shawnee, Kansas, and Keith Peine and wife Teresa of Garnett, Kansas; Nadine was the proud grandmother to twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Family members fondly recall memories of Nadine shooing cows away from the ponds so her grandchildren could fish. Most holidays, everyone gathered at the farm to enjoy her home cooked feasts. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, November 21, 2015, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Scipio, Kansas. Burial will follow in the St. Boniface Cemetery in Scipio. The family will greet friends following a Rosary service at 7:00 PM, Friday evening at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Boniface Church new hall fund or to the Richmond Library.
