Nelda K. Cuppy

Nelda Katherine Cuppy, age 81, of Moran, Kansas, passed away June 17, 2023, at her residence. Nelda was born July 26, 1941, in Bronson, Kansas, to William F. (Fred) Rudisill and Osa Vera (Doane) Rudisill.

Nelda graduated in 1959 from Bronson High School, Bronson, Kansas. While attending school there, she was a cheerleader, editor of the school newspaper, and homecoming queen. Nelda was involved in music while in high school, where she played the piano and was an award-winning accordion player.

Nelda and Gary (Butch) Cuppy were married December 5, 1959. Butch passed away October 25, 1989.

Nelda graduated in 1962 from Iola Junior College. She then attended Kansas State Teachers' College in Pittsburg, Kansas, where she first-majored in home economics, but later graduated in 1964 with a master's degree in mathematics.

Nelda's first teaching position was teaching math, physics, and chemistry at Moran High School. In the fall 1970, she began teaching math at Allen County Community Junior College in Iola. While there, she was the first computer science instructor, she was a longtime Phi Theta Kappa advisor, and she established the math relays.

Nelda and Larry Manes were married August 18, 1995, in Girard, Kansas. Larry passed away May 2, 2023.

Nelda retired from teaching in 2000.

Nelda was a member of the DAR, Business & Professional Women, Order of the Eastern Star, Moran Ruritans, and the Moran Day Committee. She was a Master Gardener, volunteered at Moran Manor as a reader, and helped with THRIVE food distribution. Nelda had a passion for sewing and making Larry's shirts. She was awarded BPW Woman of the Year in 2001 and was selected as Allen Community College's Distinguished Alumni in 2001.

Nelda was preceded in death by her two husbands; her parents; daughter, Jo Cuppy; sister, Ardis Rudisill; and brother, Earnest Rudisill.

Nelda is survived by son, Larry Cuppy; son-in-law, Walter Palmisano; sister-in-law, Lee Rudisill; grandchildren, Devon Cuppy, Cassandra Cuppy, Seth Cuppy; one great-grandson, Samuel Epstein; and a host of friends.

A Celebration of Life for Nelda and Larry will be held at Allen Community College, Room 101 in the Theater Building, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21, 2023.
A graveside service for Nelda will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 22, 2023, in the Moran Cemetery, Moran, Kansas.

Memorials are suggested to the Larry Manes & Nelda Cuppy Athletic Scholarship at Allen Community College, and be left with Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, 1883 US Highway 54, Iola, Kansas.
