Rev. Norbert Lickteig, age 75, a priest with the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas for 48 years, passed away January 7, 2010 at his home in Shawnee. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church, Garnett, Kansas. Wake Service and visitation will also be at Holy Angels on Monday, January 11, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. Born in Welda, Kansas on February 27, 1934, the eldest son of Greg and Veronica Lickteig expressed a desire to study for the priesthood while in his teens. He attended Garnett Elementary and Holy Angels schools and graduated from Garnett High School in 1952. Rev. Lickteig graduated from St. Thomas Seminary, Denver, receiving both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in 1957 and a degree in Sacred Theology in 1961. Following his ordination for the archdiocese on June 3, 1961, he celebrated his First Mass at Holy Angels Church, Garnett, Kans. June 4, 1961. Immediately he began serving in parish work at Holy Name Church, Kansas City, Kans. and as Chaplain of the Kansas University Medical Center. Rev. Lickteig served as Vice Chancellor of the archdiocese for eight years and as Director of the Archdiocesan Mission Office or Propagation of the Faith for 38 years, connecting the many parishes of the archdiocese with countless missionaries from all over the world. His lengthy commitment to the missions and to educating Catholics of their importance and need for support was well-known. Parishes at which he served as pastor include St. Patrick, Emerald; St. Joseph, Waverly; St Patrick, Osage City; St. Patrick, Scranton, St. Patrick, Corning; St. Francis deSales, Lansing; Immaculate Conception, Leavenworth, St. Patrick, Kansas City, Kans. and Christ the King, Topeka. After retirement in 2004, he maintained an active pastoral life, substituting frequently for pastors at Sunday liturgies in many parishes within the archdiocese. Rev. Lickteig chaired the Priests' Council of the Archdiocese for ten years, and also served for ten years as the Provincial Representative to the National Federation of Priests' Councils. Additionally, he served on the National Board of the Propagation of the Faith. A member of the Archdiocesan Priest's Retirement Board, he was also a Consultor for the Archdiocese. Involvement in local civic organizations and community service included serving as Chaplain of the Downtown Optimists, Topeka and as Chaplain of the Topeka Serra Club, which he founded in 1991. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and by his nephew, Ted Teichgraeber. Survivors include his sister, Loeda, Garnett; his sister, Linda and husband, Tom Teichgraeber, Lisle, Ill and family: Tara and Teddy LaBouff, Phoenix, Ariz; Stephen Teichgraeber, Lisle, Ill; Jennifer Teichgraeber and Nicholas, Spokane, Wash.
