Norman B. "Whitey" Compston, 86, of Iola, Kansas, died Thursday, December 2, 2010, at Labette Health in Parsons, Kansas. Norman was born January 7, 1924, on the family farm west of Lenapah, Oklahoma, the son of Ruben L. and Allie Ray (Curtis) Compston. He grew up on the farm and attended school at Lenapah. On December 2, 1943, Norman married Helen D. Langworthy in Nowata, Oklahoma. They made their home at Leavenworth, Kansas, Delaware, Oklahoma and Springfield, Illinois following his work. During World War II he was a welder on barges in Leavenworth, Kansas. He later worked in oil fields in Oklahoma. For 20 years, he was an over the road trucker and for 30 years, he was a pipefitter with the Local #137 in Springfield, Illinois. Norman retired in 1985 and they moved to the farm home at Lenapah, Oklahoma. In 2001, they moved to Iola, Kansas to be closer to family. His hobbies included restoring Model A's and street rods. He belonged to Sagamon Valley Model A Club and the Tag Along Street Rodders. Norman and Helen hosted the World of Wheels Car Shows in Springfield, Illinois, for many years. SURVIVORS: His wife of 67 years: Helen Compston of the home 6 Children: Norma Wilson & husband, Jack of Bronson, KS, Jo Ann Squire & husband, Stanley of Wichita, KS, Jackie Clark & husband, Willie of Springfield, IL, Marilyn Henn & husband, Duane of Kimberling City, MO, Janet Korte & husband, Loren of Humboldt, and Don Compston & wife, Laura of Waxahachie, TX 20 Grandchildren, 38 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great Great Grandchildren with one on the way. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Rae Compston, granddaughter, Rebecca Ann Compston, 4 brothers and 1 sister. VISITATION: 10:00-11:00 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola, Kansas GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 1:00 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010, at the Mount Washington Cemetery at Lenapah, Oklahoma MEMORIAL: In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Allen County Hospice. Memorial gifts may be left with the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel of Iola, which is in charge of arrangements.
