Onella Valentine, age 94, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2020 at her home in Neosho Falls, Kansas.
Onella was born January 26, 1926 to John and Lela (Banks) Gumfory in Iola, Kansas. She attended school in Gas City up to eighth grade then came to Iola High School where she later graduated. She married Virgle V. Valentine on December 8, 1941. This union was blessed with seven children. Onella was a homemaker and spent her time taking care of her family.
Onella was known for her extravagant quilts and sewing abilities. She was very family oriented and took every opportunity she was presented with to spend time with her loved ones. She was always cooking things from scratch for her large family. Family reunions were very important to her also. She cherished the time spent together. In their spare time, they were able to all go camping together and go fishing and boating.
Onella was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Virgle V. Valentine; son, Virgle Royce Valentine; brothers, Leland “Bon” Gumfory, Charles Gumfory, J.M. “Bud” Gumfory, John Gumfory, and Duane Gumfory; sisters, Juanita Maple, Janet Mueller, and Roberta Hutton.
Onella was survived by four sons, John “Bud” Valentine and wife, Penny of Washington State, Jack Valentine of Iola, Keith Valentine of Iola, and Earl Valentine of Neosho Falls; two daughters, Lela Hurlock and husband, Randy of Gas, Marta Riebel and husband, Danny of Iola; brother, LeRoy “Lee” Gumfory of Iola; twelve grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and numerous other family members and friends.
A graveside service in honor of Onella will be held Friday, May 22, 2020 at 1:00 P.M. at Highland Cemetery in Iola, Kansas. Onella will lie in state Friday, May 22, 2020 from 8:30AM to 12:00PM for friends to pay their respects, family may not be present. Memorials in honor of Onella are suggested to Good Shepherd Hospice and may be left with the funeral home. Condolences for the family may be left online at
