Percy Ray Oliver, age 87, of Osawatomie, Kansas, passed away on Monday, October 28, 2019, at the Miami County Medical Center in Paola, Kansas.
He was born on March 1, 1932, at Mankato, Kansas. Percy was the third of eight children born to Guy H. and Dorothy R. (Scarrow) Oliver. Percy attended school in Burr Oak, Kansas. He was veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army from January 1953 to January 1955. Following his time in the service, Percy returned to Burr Oak where he married Ruth Barnes. They later divorced. Throughout his working years, Percy worked for the City of Burr Oak before going on to work for local farmers. On June 20, 1980, Percy was united in marriage to Louise (Macklin) Taylor, in Laclede, Missouri. Percy spent four years building grain elevators in Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Nebraska. In 1986, they moved to Garnett, where Percy worked for Wayne Henderson and then for Charlie Parks. In 2010 Percy and Louise moved to Osawatomie to be near their children and grandchildren. In his retirement years, Percy enjoyed countless hours pitching horse shoes. His horseshoe career encompassed many state tournaments and two World Horseshoe Tournaments. Percy also enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting deer, coon and pheasant. He made many friends in the time that he spent drinking coffee. Percy loved going to his grandchildren's activities and rarely missed any. He especially enjoyed the time he was able to spend with his latest great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Harold, Richard and David.
Percy is survived by his wife, Louise Oliver, of the home; two step-sons, Mike Taylor and wife Saliha of Osawatomie, Kansas; Scott Taylor and wife Kursten of Paola, Kansas; step-daughter, Lisa Henderson and husband David of Osawatomie; nine grandchildren, Michael, Logan, Amanda, Paige, Hunter, Braxton, Lindsey, Rachel and Hailey; and eleven great grandchildren; sisters, Carol Peters and husband Ervin of Bird City, Kansas; Joyce Fullerton and husband Roy of Superior, Nebraska; brothers, Carl Oliver and wife Sharon of Wamego, Kansas; Guy Oliver and wife Patsy of Apache Junction, Arizona.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, November 2, 2019, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas. The family will greet friends at 1:00 PM, Saturday prior to the funeral service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ottawa Horseshoe Club and left in care of the funeral home.
