Rhoda Mae Gilliland, age 71, passed away at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas on February 4, 2024.
Rhoda was born on June 17, 1952, in Oxford, Maine, to Donald Cushman and Robin (Hall) Caswell. She grew up in Maine, graduating from Oxford Hills High School in 1970. She went on to attend the University of Maine at Portland-Gorham. In 1976, Rhoda had her only son, Troy. Together, they moved to Iola, Kansas. Here is where she met the love of her life, Richard Gilliland. They were married on September 10, 1983 and spent many happy years together until his passing in 2019. While living in Iola, Rhoda worked at the Haldex Brake Plant until it closed in 2010.
Before Rhoda's leukemia diagnosis in 2013, she was very active in the community and was always on the go. She loved to visit family, go to school events, volunteer for activities, and she coached softball and soccer. After 2013, while less active, she still enjoyed time with family, specifically her grandchildren. She took great pride in being the best grandmother she could be.
Rhoda is preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Thomas Cushman and Joseph Cushman; and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Roy and Peggy Gilliland.
Rhoda is survived by her son, Troy (Lisa) Smith; sisters, Hilda Roush, and Bonita (Gary) Smith; sister-in-law, Marsha (Kenny) Storrer; stepchildren, Michelle White, Chuck Gilliland, and Angie Luedke; grandchildren, Austin, Chase, Parker, Elijah, Jaci, Jesse, Britany, Cassidy, Kamryn, and Trewit; 8 great-grandchildren; and other cherished family members and friends.
