Richard H. “Dick” Wittry, age 92, of Greeley, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, December 13, 2016, at his home in rural Greeley. He was born on April 22, 1924, in Anderson County, Kansas, near Greeley. Dick was the third of five children born to Arthur and Frances (Litsch) Wittry. Dick was a lifelong farmer, he worked hard all of his life, actively farming up until age 85. He grew mainly wheat, soybeans and corn. He raised cattle, and had a special way with land and animals. He was organized, and an accomplished farmer. In his younger years, he was given the “Outstanding Young Farmer Award.” In many ways, Dick was a walking Farmer’s Almanac. Dick was a lifelong member of the St. John’s Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus of Greeley. He was a member of the Elks, Farm Bureau and other organizations. Dick and Jo Anne traveled extensively, visiting all 50 states and Canada in their motor home. Throughout their travels Dick enjoyed visiting with people of all walks of life. Dick had large, strong hands, and a firm handshake. He had a good sense of humor, and an infectious laugh. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gus E. Wittry; and daughter, Lori Anne. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Jo Anne Wittry (Adams), of the home; adult children, David, Teresa and Lesa; siblings, Gladys Nichols (96 years), Helen McKnight (94 years) and baby sister Betty Dutton (84 years). Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Greeley, Kansas. Burial will follow in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Greeley.
