Roy Lester Harris, age 95, of Iola, Kansas, died Friday, July 17, 2009, at the Allen County Hospital in Iola. Roy was born December 18, 1913, on a farm west of Iola in the West Liberty community, the son of Charles F. and Nettie I. (Bauman) Harris. He attended the Liberty Common School, graduated from Iola High School in 1932, and then attended Iola Junior College. On December 18, 1934, Roy married F. Maxine Weldin. In 1936 they moved to western Kansas where they lived until returning to Iola in 1952. He worked as a refrigeration and appliance repairman and did electrical contracting. His wife preceded him in death on February 18, 1990. Roy enjoyed improving the family homestead and in later years enjoyed television game shows, movies, and working crossword puzzles. He was a former member of the Iola Optimist Club and was presently a member of the Allen County Historical Society and Salem United Methodist Church. SURVIVORS: 1 Son: Leon Harris & wife, Ardith of Iola, Kansas 1 Daughter: Sharon Harvey & husband, Ted of Effingham, South Carolina 5 Grandsons: Gerry Harvey & wife, Diane of Newton, North Carolina; Jerry Harvey & wife, Tammy of Cary, North Carolina; Jeffrey Harvey & wife, Maria of Summerville, South Carolina; Randall Harvey & wife, Shari of Pocatello, Idaho; and David Harvey of Morrisville, North Carolina 7 Great Grandchildren He was preceded in death by a grandson, Stuart Harris. VISITATION: 6:00-8:00 p.m., Monday, July 20, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola. FUNERAL SERVICE: 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at the Salem United Methodist Church west of Iola. The Rev. Gene McIntosh will officiate.
