Ruby Croan, age 90, of Osawatomie, Kansas, passed away on Monday, November 21, 2011, at the Wellsville Retirement Community in Wellsville, Kansas. She was born on October 16, 1921, in Parker, Kansas, the daughter of John Marshall and Nora Jane (Grady) McGraw. She grew up in the Parker and Bush City areas where she attended school. On November 11, 1937, Ruby was united in marriage to Vernon Allen Croan in Iola, Kansas. This union was blessed with eight children. Ruby was a homemaker while her children were still at home. She later worked as a seamstress at Warner Manufacturing in Garnett then as a nurse's aide in Garnett and Mound City. She also drove a school bus for Prairie View before working as a foster grandparent for Tri-Ko in Osawatomie. She enjoyed dancing, crocheting and quilting, painting ceramics, tending her garden and flowers. She will be missed for her cooking, especially her hot rolls, apple butter and jellies. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vernon Croan on May 23, 1983; daughter Velma Hermreck on December 4, 1978; son-in-law Kermit Chase; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers and sisters; Roy, William and Clyde McGraw; two sisters, Opal Meisner; Hattie Burkett; and two infant sisters. Ruby is survived by three sons, LaVern Croan and wife Judy Kay of Blue Mound, Kansas, John Croan and wife Sarah of Lane, Kansas, Kenneth Croan and wife Rose of Bush City, Kansas; four daughters, LaVonne Chase of Centerville, Kansas, Judy Gaddis and husband Gene of Lubbock, Texas, Shirley Weems and husband Richard of Wellsville, Kansas, Martha "Pete" Sumners and husband Larry of Centerville, Kansas; thirty-two grandchildren. Ruby was also blessed with many great and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 26, 2011, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Garnett Cemetery in Garnett, Kansas. Family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wellsville Retirement Community and left in care of the funeral home.
