Ruth Evans

Ruth M. Evans, 100, of Iola died Sunday, March 25, 2012, in Iola. Ruth was born Sept. 18, 1911, in Chanute. The family moved to Mildred in 1927 where Ruth graduated from high school. She later attended Pittsburg State Teachers College and taught first through eighth grades at two country schools near Bayard. Ruth lived near Bayard for 33 years and the past 28 years in Iola. She worked at Allen County Hospital for 12 years. She is survived by her four children, Vernon Phillips Jr. and his wife Gwen, Kansas City, Lee Phillips and his wife, Joyce, Louisburg, Maxine (Phillips) Cooksey and her husband, Dick, Allen, Texas, and Andy Evans Jr. and his wife, Shirley, Iola. She also leaves a brother, Bob Cunningham and his wife, Sylvia, Bartlesville, Okla. Ruth was also blessed with 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for 2:00 p.m. May 26, at the Mildred Methodist Church. Ruth was a member of the Methodist Church since age 11 and taught Sunday school at Mildred for 40 years.
