Scott Welch

Scott Robert Welch, of Moran, Kansas, died March 12, 2025, in a farming accident east of Moran. He was 44 years old. The son of Robert and Cheryl (Thompson) Welch, he was born July 20, 1980, in Iola, Kansas.

Scott was the hardest-working man we knew, building a life of abundance and love. As a little boy, he was a dreamer who wanted nothing more than to be like his father-raising animals and crops. His imagination came alive in the living room, where the carpet became cropland, toy tractors baled hay, and scrap lumber formed cattle pens. Those childhood dreams laid the foundation for the life he would create. Through grit, determination, and an unmatched work ethic, Scott turned those dreams into reality, building a legacy far greater than we can put into words. Everything he did was for his family-sacrificing daily, always pushing forward to give them a better future. He didn't just work hard-he poured his heart into everything, creating a life full of purpose, love, and unwavering devotion.

Known to most as "Scottie," he had an infectious, vivacious personality that could light up any room the moment he walked in. With his animated storytelling, witty remarks, and endless jokes, he brought joy to everyone around him. Scott had a true gift with people-he never met a stranger and made you feel like an old friend within minutes. He embraced everyone with kindness, no matter their background, and shared his laughter freely. Even on tough days, he rarely showed it, always giving his best to others. He was the best person we knew and will be deeply and forever missed.

Scott graduated from Marmaton Valley High School in 1998, he excelled in football, basketball, track, band, and FFA. He was President of Student Council, Homecoming King, and graduated with honors. He later earned a degree from Allen County Community College and Pittsburg State University in Business Administration-Finance.

After graduating high school, he met the love of his life, Amy Dawson. After dating for six years, they married on April 5, 2008. They had four children: Kalli Virginia, Kooper Robert James, Kinley Cheryl, and Karly Kay. Kalli Virginia, their infant daughter, preceded him in death on July 21, 2009. Scott's love for his children was seen through his involvement and support-sideline coaching and cheering on their sporting events, 4-H, and other activities they were involved in. He was proud to raise his son Kooper to follow in his footsteps and had him helping with chores at an early age. They shared a love for sports, always keeping up with the latest games and never lacking conversation or laughter between them. Kinley and Karly were daddy's girls and loved to be with their dad, whether it be feeding animals, butchering at the store, playing card games, or cuddling up to watch a good show.

Besides being a rancher for 27 years and farming, he was the owner of Our Market and Butcher Shop in Humboldt, Kansas, and currently worked as an Ag loan officer at the Bank of Commerce in Chanute, KS. His past work included being a partner in the SEK Stockyards in Gas City, KS, and working for the Fort Scott Livestock Association and MoKan Livestock Market. He was a member of the Moran United Methodist Church and enjoyed fishing at his ponds with the kids and attending Kansas University basketball, Royals, and Chiefs games with his family.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Kalli Virginia; father, Robert Welch; father-in-law, James Brett Dawson; cousin, Jill Hartman; uncles, Don Welch, Leon and Darrell Thompson; and aunt, Nina Worthington.

Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Amy (Dawson) Welch, and children Kooper, Kinley, and Karly, all of the home. His mother: Cheryl Welch of Moran, KS. Mother-in-law: Debbie Dawson and Mike Hofer of Humboldt, KS. Sisters: Tina Ashford and husband Steven of Bonner Springs, KS; Teri Shaughnessy and husband Shayne of Iola, KS. Nieces and nephews: Aaron, Nicole, Emily, and Autumn Ashford; Chase, Shelby, and Ty Shaughnessy. Sister- and brother-in-law: Shawna Ivy and husband Milton of Humboldt, KS; Matthew Dawson of Humboldt, KS; Hali Dawson of Lee's Summit, MO. Nieces and nephews: Dayton, Broc, Elisha, and Alexis. Aunts & Uncles: Judy Welch, Larry Thompson, Sandy Thompson, Nita & Bob Hunt, Linda & Chuck Heffern.

Visitation will be on Friday, March 28th, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Moran United Methodist Church, 129 Cedar Street, Moran, Kansas. Scott's funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 29th at 10:00 am in the Marmaton Valley High School Old Gymnasium in Moran, KS. Lloyd Houk will officiate the service, and burial will immediately follow in the Moran Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made out to Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, to go directly to Amy and their children.
