Shirley Grewing

Shirley A. Grewing, 81, of Iola, Kansas, died Friday, February 12, 2010, at the Allen County Hospital in Iola. She had Parkinson's disease. Born December 20, 1928 at Colony, she was the daughter of Leon and Laura (Smith) Persinger. She graduated from Kincaid High School and worked in Kansas City for a year before returning to marry Edwin F. Grewing in 1947. They farmed together west of Mildred and reared seven children before Edwin died Dec. 9, 1978, and she later moved to Iola. Mrs. Grewing retired from Allen County Social and Rehabilitation Services in 1994, after which she devoted her time to learn new computer skills, enjoying the birds and flowers in her big yard, cooking for family get-togethers and entertaining her grandchildren and their little ones. She had lived at Windsor Place nursing home since 2007. SURVIVORS: 3 Daughters: Colleen Dobbins of Alexandria, VA, Lorrita (spouse Lonny) Moorehouse and Frances (spouse Steve) Kinzle, both of Iola 3 Sons: Frank (spouse Pattyjo) Grewing, Dave (spouse Teresa) Grewing and Clay (spouse Lonna) Grewing, all of rural Mildred. 1 Brother: Paul Persinger, Baldwin, KS 18 Grandchildren & 22 Great Grandchildren. Son Matt (Shari) Grewing died in an auto accident in 1988. VISITATION: 6:00-7:00 p.m., Monday, Feb. 15, 2010, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola. FUNERAL SERVICE: 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola. The Chaplain Lloyd W. Houk will officiate.
