Shirley R. Payne, age 78, of Colony, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, August 19, 2014, at the Allen County Hospital in Iola, Kansas. She was born on September 15, 1935, in the Northcott Community, rural Colony, Kansas, the daughter of Carl and Wilma (Gilliland) McGhee. As a young girl her family moved to the Bloomfield, Iowa area. She and her siblings rode horses several miles to attend a one room country school. The family later returned to the Colony area, and she graduated from Colony High School. Shirley met her future husband in Colony. Shirley was united in marriage to Carl E. Payne on July 14, 1952, in Iola, Kansas. This union was blessed with four children. Shirley worked for Warner Manufacturing in Garnett for 5 years. She also sold Avon. Shirley then began working in Iola where she worked at TG&Y for 5 years, Knorps Pharmacy for 2 years, and then for ACE Hardware. Shirley enjoyed quilting and crocheting as her hobby as well as a side job. Everything she did was hand sewn; she never used a machine for the quilting. She also enjoyed canning from her garden, crossword puzzles, bird watching, fishing and camping. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Carl on June 30, 2011; infant daughter Melanie; and one sister, Carlene McGhee. Shirley is survived by one son, Steven Payne and wife, Debbie of Alsea, Oregon; two daughters, Sharon Layne and husband, Ron Poffenbarger, of Iola, Kansas, and Annette Crawford of Colony; 8 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren; two brothers, Don McGhee and wife Pat of Iola, Kansas; Larry McGhee and wife Judy of Edwardsville, Kansas; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 23, 2014, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Colony, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Colony Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Colony First Responders.
