Susan Padfield, age 77, of Garnett, Kansas passed away Friday, August 14, 2020, at her home.
Susan Elaine Burns was born February 7, 1943 in Independence, Kansas. She was the first of two children born to Robert E. and Marvelle (Coyner) Burns. Susan grew up in Cherryvale, graduating from high school there in 1960. On December 30, 1962 Susan was united in marriage to Dr. Jerry Padfield at the Cherryvale Presbyterian Church. They made their home in Houston and Memphis before moving to Garnett, where they spent the following fifty-three years. Susan began working as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone in Cherryvale, then Southern Bell in Houston and AT&T in Memphis. In 1986, Susan earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Adult Education from Ottawa University. She then worked in the Adult Education Center for USD 290, Ottawa, until retiring in 2009.
Susan enjoyed working in her yard, walking with friends, attending her granddaughters’ activities, and trying to keep Mark and Jerry out of trouble. She was a member of the Nova Vista Sorority and local bridge club for many years. Family get-togethers will not be the same without her chocolate icebox cake. Her family was her greatest joy, but spending quality time with her friends was a close second. She loved helping people, but hated being in the spotlight.
Susan was preceded by her parents, and her brother, Robert W. Burns.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Jerry, of the home; son, Mark and wife, Rachel, of Tonganoxie, Kansas; two granddaughters, Sydney and Aubrey; six nephews and their families, Brent, Kirk, Thad and Chad Shaffer, Bob and Willie Burns.
Funeral services for Susan will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, August 19, 2020, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, 219 S. Oak St., Garnett, Kansas. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, in the Fairview Cemetery, Cherryvale, Kansas. The family will greet friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday evening at the funeral home in Garnett.
