Sylven Hartzler, age 90, Yates Center, Kansas, passed away October 14, 2019, at the Life Care Center of Burlington, Burlington, Kansas. Sylven was born April 15, 1929, in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, to William Joseph Boulanger and Lillie Gertrude (Sharp) Boulanger.
Sylven graduated in 1947 from Woodston High School, Woodston, Kansas. She attended Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kansas, where she earned a teaching certificate. Sylven taught rural school in Woodston and later was a substitute teacher.
Sylven and Murten Hartzler were married May 25, 1947, in Stockton, Kansas. In 1955 the Hartzlers moved to Yates Center, Kansas. Sylven was a bookkeeper for 44 years for Vic Adams Trucking, Inc. in Yates Center. Sylven and her husband operated a propane business for a few years before expanding their business to include farming and ranching.
Sylven was a very active community supporter. She was a member and treasurer of the Woodson County Fair Board for 40 years, a 4-H leader for many years, a member of the Yates Center Lions Club, a member of Golden Rod Chapter 163 Order of the Eastern Star, and she bowled on the Bowleretta Charter League in Iola for 50 years.
Sylven was a wonderful friend to many people. She was a strong-willed and determined person who always took her work seriously, but always gave freely of her time to community events. Sylven loved the county fairs, enjoyed raising cattle, liked to garden, and she remained very active her entire life.
Sylven was preceded in death by her husband, Murten Hartzler; her parents; two brothers, George Leon Boulanger and Joseph Pleasant Boulanger; and two sisters, Emma Lorraine Boulanger and Delores Celeste Boulanger.
Sylven is survived by her daughter, Cheryl McCormick and husband, L.D., Yates Center, Kansas; grandson, Shawn McCormick, Pittsburg, Kansas; sister, Virginia Breckenridge and husband, Leon, Spokane, Washington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service honoring Sylven’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 18, 2019, at The Town Hall, formerly the First Christian Church, 201 South Main Street, Yates Center, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Yates Center Cemetery.
